Rajah Caruth: 3rd Black driver to win a NASCAR national series race

Roger Caruth was seated nearby, holding a checkered cloth, as he took calls from well-wishers back home who were still awake, thousands of miles away from the Las Vegas Motor Speedway oval.

He now stands alongside Wendell Scott and Bubba Wallace as one of the few Black drivers to secure a victory in a NASCAR national series race. Caruth began the event from his first pole position in the Truck Series and led for 38 laps, including the final 21 circuits, to claim the win.

Securing his first Truck Series pole earlier on Friday, Caruth finished just 0.001 seconds ahead of Christian Eckes.

Despite only starting to race in an actual car five years ago, Caruth achieved his most significant victory on Friday night, becoming the third Black driver in NASCAR history to win a national series race.

A graduate of NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program, Caruth now joins the ranks of Hall of Famer Wendell Scott and Bubba Wallace as the third Black driver to secure a victory in a NASCAR national series race.

Rajah Caruth marked a historic evening by becoming the third Black driver to win a NASCAR national series race, placing his name alongside the trailblazing Wendell Scott and current Cup Series star Bubba Wallace.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that HendrickCars.com had extended its primary partnership with Caruth from 10 races to the entire 23-race season.

Ultimately, Caruth finished 0.851 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Tyler Ankrum, who was rapidly closing in during the final stages of the race.

Throughout a 62-lap green-flag run to the finish, crew chief Chad Walter made the decision to bring Caruth’s No. 71 Chevrolet to pit road early in the cycle.
